Dear Alexander Muir Families:
Due to ongoing construction happening at the North/East side of our school we have had to decrease the tarmac play area for students. With the wet, spring weather our field area is also currently not available for student use. We have had to call for tarmac only recesses. This will need to continue until further notice.
With over 550 students at Alexander Muir Public School ranging in age from 6 years old to 13 years old, all sharing our very condensed schoolyard at recesses, we have noticed that minor student injuries, caused by this congestion, have been a concern over the past few weeks. Students do not have enough space to safely play and run around on our tarmac area.
After careful review of the options available to us we have decided to return to a staggered morning & lunch recess until the field area is once again available for us to use. This means that staggered recesses at morning recess & lunch recess will take effect starting on Wednesday, April 2nd and remain until the school field area is available for use.
Morning Recess ~Grades 4-8 will go outside for the first fifteen minutes of recess (9:40 a.m. -9:55 a.m.) & Grades 1-3 will go outside for the second fifteen minutes of recess (9:55 a.m. -10:10 a.m.). The remaining fifteen minutes will be indoors for both groups.
Lunch Hour ~Grade 1 to Grade 3 classes will eat lunch indoors from 11:50-12:10 (early lunch) then go outside for the remainder of recess 12:10-12:50 (same as currently occurring). NEW! Grades 4 to 8 students will go outside starting at 11:50 until 12:30 and then return to class to eat lunch from 12:30-12:50 (late lunch) Please note that this will not affect Kindergarten students as they already have a staggered lunch hour and a separate outdoor play area.
We hope that these changes will help reduce the number of students on our school yard and support a safer school yard for all, provide more space and room for students to enjoy their outdoor play time and help reduce the number of minor injuries at our school.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact the principal or vice principal at our school at (905) 895-9466.
