Alexander Muir will be participating in Freedom to Read Week next week (March 24th-March 28th). Freedom to Read is a social justice concept, highlighting that many children around the world either don’t have books to read, aren’t allowed (or can’t afford) to go to school to learn to read, or are oppressed and not allowed to learn to read. We will be focusing our attention on this important issue. The level of comprehension will vary of course between the various grade levels, but we believe that this equity issue can be discussed at the very basic level depending on the grade taught. Helping to celebrate our ability in Canada to express ourselves through our ‘Freedom of Speech’, we are planning on creating reading posters for each class picturing our favourite books, authors and/or genres. These pictures will then be displayed throughout the school. We all have the right and privilege to read. Let’s not take it for granted. Read on!
We invite you to pick up a book, magazine, comic, newspaper or e-book during the week and join us in celebrating our Right to READ!
