Dear Alexander Muir Families:
As you may already be aware, Alexander Muir will begin full day kindergarten in September 2014. To accommodate the need for full day kindergarten classrooms our school is scheduled to have an addition which will create a new YMCA Daycare facility and two additional kindergarten spaces at the North East corner of our school. The existing daycare will be retrofitted into full day kindergarten classrooms. Construction is scheduled to be completed in time for the start up in September 2014.
In order to meet these timelines, construction of the new daycare addition will begin during the March Break. This means that the North East portion of our school will be fenced off (and no longer available to students, staff and parents) for the remainder of this school year and throughout the summer months. Safety fences will be installed around the entire construction perimeter to ensure safety for all.
Upon return after the March Break, it is important to note that students in grades 2 to 4 who normally entered/exited the school through DOOR A (North East) doors will be entering/exiting the school through DOOR D. We will have a number of classes entering/exiting through these doors each day so we would ask that you ensure you remain well back from the doors at entry and dismissal times. As well, the North East portion of the tarmac area will not be available to students/staff for recesses and lunch hour.
Safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority. We have met with board officials, the architect and the construction company to ensure minimal disruption to students & staff of both Alexander Muir and the YMCA Daycare during school/operating hours. However, construction will take place throughout the day within the enclosed construction area only. We will continue to monitor the situation and meet with board officials to strategize solutions should they be required.
Although the construction will cause some disruption and inconvenience, we are looking forward to our newly created kindergarten classrooms and our new YMCA daycare for the start of the next school year.
